Little Scientists and Surface Tension

We are doing a wide variety of experiments this year that both Miss M and The Bug can participate in.  One of the first topics we studied was surface tension.

We filled a drinking glass to the brim with water and then gradually add pennies.  By adding pennies slowly, we were able to add an additional 30 pennies to our already full glass without spilling.

Our glass actually got a very good bulge going that the kids were able to observe even without the magnifying glass.

Next, we did an experiment to change the surface tension.  We spooned water droplets onto the table and observed how they held together.  Then the kids touched them with a straw dipped in dish detergent and watched what happened to them.

I love simple science experiments with a big impact!
