A Nile River Model

We are up to early Egypt in our history studies and have been studying the Nile River delta.  We learned how the Egyptians used the flood cycles to help water their fields, and the made our own version of the delta.  (This idea comes from the Story of the World Activity Guide.)

First, we added dirt to a foil baking pan.  Miss M made the Nile River out of aluminum foil and rocks.  We added some pyramids from our Ancient Egypt toob and some rocks to represent the mountains.

Finally, we added water and flooded our delta.  (I added blue food coloring to help the kids see the river better.)

We added grass seed to our dirt, and will continue to flood the river once a week.  The goal is for our grass to grow.  I'll post the results in a few weeks.
